Salem in October A visitor's guide from people who live here

Every October, Salem turns into Halloween's main stage, and those of us who live here plan around it the way other towns plan around a nor'easter. This is the guide we'd hand a friend who's coming up: the dates that matter, what's actually on this month, how to get in without circling for parking, and which days to pick if you'd rather see the city than the crowd.

What Haunted Happenings is, and the 2026 dates

Haunted Happenings is Salem's month-long Halloween season. Destination Salem, which runs the official Haunted Happenings site, bills it as the largest Halloween celebration in the world and expects more than a million visitors for the parades, vendor fairs, walking tours, museums and late-night events. It goes on rain or shine.

  • Thursday, October 1, 6:30pm: the Grand Parade. The 29th one kicks the season off, themed "Old-School Halloween" for Salem400+. It leaves Shetland Park on Congress Street, runs Derby, Central, Front and Washington Streets, down the Essex Street pedestrian mall, and ends on Salem Common. Roads on the route close from about 4pm to 9:30pm, and cars in the South Harbor Garage can't get out until about 9:30pm.
  • Every weekend, September 26 to November 1. Essex Street from Hawthorne Boulevard to New Liberty Street is closed to through traffic with no on-street parking, 9am to 10pm Saturdays and Sundays and from noon on Fridays. Indigenous Peoples' Day, Monday, October 12, gets the same treatment.
  • Saturday, October 3, 9am: Witch City 5K from Salem Willows. No closures planned, but expect slow going on Derby Street, Fort Avenue and Route 1A.
  • Saturday, October 17, 8am: Devil's Chase road race, also from Salem Willows, with traffic impacts until about 11am.
  • Saturday, October 31: Halloween. Downtown streets close to all traffic no later than noon, possibly earlier if crowds build. A drone show at 10:15pm replaces the fireworks this year. The MBTA's Salem station garage is closed to cars coming or going from 6pm to 1am.

Getting here and parking in October

The City of Salem is blunt about this: don't plan to drive into downtown in October, especially on weekends. Traffic is heavy and parking is severely limited. We agree, and we live here.

  • Commuter rail. The MBTA Newburyport/Rockport Line runs about 30 minutes from Boston's North Station, or about 5 minutes from downtown Beverly, and drops you right downtown. Driving partway and parking at another station works too.
  • Ferry. The seasonal Salem Ferry leaves Boston's Long Wharf and takes under an hour, landing at 10 Blaney Street, a short walk from the attractions.
  • If you have to drive. The city runs free parking on Saturdays, Sundays and Indigenous Peoples' Day at 108 Jefferson Avenue, about a 5-minute walk into downtown. Come early: lots fill fast.
  • Closures. Check the city's October road closure list before you set out, and expect delays on Route 114, Route 1A and, around Halloween, Route 128.

When to go (and when to stay home)

Weekends are the crush. The city flags the heaviest traffic and likely road closures for the weekend of October 24 and 25, Friday, October 30, and Halloween weekend itself, and Halloween brings closures and heavy traffic all day and into the night.

If you can pick, pick a weekday. Destination Salem says midweek brings lighter crowds and shorter lines, and getting into town before midday beats the worst of it on any day. And if you can, stay the night: you get the evening tours and events without a late drive home.

Where to eat, what to do, where to shop, where to stay

Eat and drink

Things to do

Popular tours sell out, so book ahead. Compare Salem ghost, walking and trolley tours, then fill the gaps with Salem's museums and the historic sites and witch trials landmarks. Wander a few blocks off Essex Street, too: the waterfront and the quieter historic streets are where a lot of the good stuff lives.

Shop

Stay

Staying over makes October easier. Browse Salem hotels and inns, and if downtown is full, Beverly is about 5 minutes away on the commuter rail.
